Basic Chinese

This course aims to hone students’ overall aural-oral proficiency and introduce the written aspect of Chinese. It focuses on expanding vocabulary, deciphering compound words, reading comprehension of extended narrative and expository passages and speaking in relative length during discussions of social issues using vocabulary and grammar suitable to their level. Students will also develop the necessary tools necessary for independent debate utilizing appropriate level vocabulary and accuracy.

Students enrolled in this course will learn to speak about educational expenses and part-time jobs available to college students in China, talk about family members and describe oneself and others, ask about weather-related questions, express time, dates and age appropriately, make appointments or invitations and plan trips to places of interest; read and write simple Chinese sentences using basic characters like Mandarin “Zai zai” and Gei gei; use of prepositions “Zai zai” and Gei gei; compare and contrast potential and descriptive complements; connect two verb phrases together using Lai (lai). Topics include word order in Mandarin as well as reading basic characters used for writing simple sentences including word order in Mandarin which include word order in Mandarin word order as well as reading basic characters used when writing simple sentences using words order and prepositions “Zai zai/Geigei”. Topics also include word order in Mandarin such as the use of prepositions “Zai zai/Gei gei” used prepositions “Zai/Gei” prepositions “Zai/lai connecting two verb phrases as well as Lai (lai) connecting two verb phrases via Lai (lai).

Intermediate Chinese

This course builds upon and expands upon grammatical structures studied in the introductory level, giving students additional practice interpreting written and spoken Chinese, cultural readings, and short films they will become acquainted with during class. A multimedia textbook program is used. This course serves as a prerequisite for advanced-level classes of Chinese.

This course seeks to equip students with the ability to actively engage in most informal and limited formal conversations regarding work, school, home or leisure activities as well as express personal meaning through learned phrases or combinations thereof. Students will be able to discuss educational expenses and part-time jobs as well as comment on various modes of transportation as well as describe physical features of China while making plans for trips there.

An introduction to China’s oral and orally-connected performance traditions such as professional storytelling, epic singing, folk songs and local drama. This course may be repeated up to three credit hours for credit. Prerequisites for enrollment in this course: 112 or equivalent and permission of instructor.

This course covers the phonetics and phonology of modern Chinese, with some study of other dialects for comparative purposes. Topics may include its morphology, syntax-semantics interface and communication in this language of communiction. Students credited for 6380 or equivalent will not be admitted. A Global Education Literature Diversity Global Studies Course.

Advanced Chinese

Built to develop both reading proficiency and cultural knowledge, learners will sharpen their spoken communication skills while expanding their vocabularies across a range of subject areas. Furthermore, learners will enhance their written communications by taking into account style considerations and rhetorical devices.

Course Description

Students at least at a Novice High oral proficiency will learn to read and write Chinese characters with emphasis placed on grammar skills development and reading comprehension.

Topics covered include the utilization of dynamic particles Liao (le), age references in VZhao (zhe), reduplication of measure words, reduplication of measure words due to reduplication, use of particles Guo and Ma when discussing multiple attributes, disyllabic words becoming monosyllabic over time and daily-used associated conjunction structures.

By engaging students in Qiu Shanshan’s novel and TV series Spring Grass, this class will develop all four language skills – with an emphasis on written composition. Students will become fluent with various topics and conversational styles while developing business vocabulary and understanding Chinese culture and traditions. They will be able to engage in informal as well as limited formal conversations relating to work, school, home life, leisure activities as well as making structured arguments or writing short texts; plus be able to describe historical tourist sites within China as well as discussing development within major Chinese cities!

Business Chinese

This course is tailored towards students interested in learning business Chinese and developing confidence to communicate with their business partners. BCT A focuses on Levels 1-3 while BCT B assesses proficiency at levels 4-5 allowing you to handle more challenging conversations among business colleagues.
