How to Spot Storm Chaser Roofers After a Dallas Hailstorm

Every time a major hailstorm hits Dallas–Fort Worth, they appear. Unmarked trucks. Out-of-state plates. Door knockers working every street in the neighborhood with a clipboard and a promise.

Storm chaser roofers aren’t all scammers — but enough of them are that DFW homeowners need to know what to watch for.

What Is a Storm Chaser Roofer?

Storm chasers are roofing crews — sometimes individuals, sometimes companies — that follow major weather events across the country. They show up in a city after a storm, knock on as many doors as possible, sign as many contracts as they can, do the work (sometimes), and move on to the next storm.

The problem isn’t that they travel. The problem is that when something goes wrong — a leak, a warranty issue, incomplete work — they’re in another state. Good luck getting them back.

Red Flags to Watch For

They Knock on Your Door Unsolicited

Legitimate local roofers get business through reputation, referrals, and marketing. They don’t need to walk neighborhoods. An unsolicited door knock after a storm is the single biggest indicator of a storm chaser operation.

They Push You to Sign Immediately

“We’re only in the area this week.” “Your neighbor already signed.” “Insurance rates are going up if you wait.” These are pressure tactics designed to prevent you from doing research. A real contractor gives you time to think.

They Ask for a Large Deposit

Established roofing companies don’t need $3,000 upfront to buy materials. They have supplier accounts and credit lines built over years of business. A big deposit request is either a sign of financial instability or an outright scam.

They Can’t Show Local References

Ask for five recent projects within 20 miles. Storm chasers can’t produce them because they weren’t here last month.

Their Address Is a P.O. Box or Out of State

Look up their address. If it’s a UPS Store, a virtual office, or a physical address 500 miles away, you know what you’re dealing with.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Never sign a contract the same day someone knocks on your door
  • Verify the contractor’s physical address in your metro area
  • Check for manufacturer certifications (GAF Master Elite, Owens Corning Platinum, etc.)
  • Read Google reviews — specifically from local homeowners
  • Ask how long they’ve been in DFW specifically
  • Verify they carry proper liability insurance and workers’ compensation

The Alternative

DFW has plenty of established, reputable roofing contractors who have been here for years — or decades. Companies with physical locations, manufacturer certifications, and long histories of local work. They’ll be here next year if you need them.

When you choose a local, established contractor, you’re not just buying a roof — you’re buying accountability. Learn more about what to look for: https://stazonroof.com/storm-chaser-roofers-dallas/
