How artificial intelligence can help supply chains handle volatility

The traditional method of supply chain planning was based entirely on fixed rules, standard costs and the assumption of stable demand. These methods were adequate in a predictable world but are not effective today, where disruption, demand variability and cost variability are the norm. As the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) and data continue to evolve, companies can begin to take a more proactive approach to supply chain planning. Rather than planning for a stable situation, they can plan for uncertainty in demand, lead time, capacity and cost. This allows supply chains to constantly adapt and make better decisions as the situation changes.

This is not simply a matter of risk management; it presents a real opportunity. Smart supply chains enable businesses to make better decisions, eliminate waste, manage costs and act quickly when market changes occur. Over time, supply chain management becomes a powerful competitive advantage rather than a simple support function, especially when supported by an artificial intelligence solution that enables faster and more accurate decision-making.

Five key capabilities of an intelligent supply chain

  1. Interconnected systems: The ability to share real-time information with suppliers, partners and distributors, as well as external market sources, enhances visibility and collaboration.
  2. AI-driven automation: AI takes care of planning and executing routine tasks, minimizing the need for human intervention and allowing teams to concentrate on high-value activities.
  3. Predictive insights: Potential disruptions are forecasted and companies can avoid issues before they occur.
  4. Flexible and adaptive planning: The supply chain dynamically adjusts to changes in demand, supply and market dynamics using intelligence process automation capabilities.
  5. Informed and actionable decisions: Superior analytics enable leaders to make informed decisions based on data-driven insights, which can be applied across various products and priorities.

Measuring supply chain intelligence

To begin building a resilient supply chain, it is essential to assess the current capabilities. Before proceeding, it is essential for companies to assess how much they have progressed in utilizing AI, automation and analytics. To help with this, the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) model is used to measure the maturity of supply chain intelligence for an organization. Achieving supply chain intelligence means that organizations must aim to achieve IQ Level 4, where AI, analytics and automation come together to build a responsive and resilient supply chain.

  • Reactive: There is finite automation and the flow of information is slow, with problems being solved only after they occur.
  • Foundational: There is some automation and there is use of basic AI, but the information is not very insightful and is mostly operational.
  • Advanced: There is a high degree of automation and risks are identified early on, with better visibility throughout the supply chain.
  • Proactive: There is end-to-end decision-making by AI, with real-time predictions and a supply chain that adjusts itself as conditions change.

Three steps to start

To arrange supply chains for the future, it is essential that companies take immediate action:

  • Assess the current supply chain IQ and identify areas where there are gaps in operations.
  • Improve data foundations and invest in AI-powered forecasting and diagnostic capabilities for high-value or short-shelf-life products.
  • Enable real-time monitoring and automate the identification of risks before they escalate into disruptions.

For leadership teams, the benefits are evident. Companies that have adopted these strategies have already realized reduced losses from expired inventory, improved service levels in the face of uncertain market conditions and improved agility in response to regulatory changes.
